Two of the important pilgrimage sites, Sithulpahua and Magul Vihara of Buddhist Civilization in Yala are a frequent route for lakhs of pilgrims who march on foot across the forest. Mirissa is a sleepy coastal village located on the southern cost of Sri Lanka, not too far from the known city of Galle. The village is famous for surfers and for whale watching. The sandy beaches, tropical weather and the marine life make it an ideal place for relaxing, mixed with some adventure. Southern Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world to see the two majestic creatures of the whale family, the Blue Whale and Sperm Whale. It falls in the annual migratory route from Horn of Africa to the Arabian Sea. Udawawale National Park was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River, as well as to protect the catchment of the reservoir. The park is famous for being home to approximately 600 resident elephants, which will be the main focus of the ‘Big Five’.
