If you thought the ‘Big Five’ is a term used only in Africa, think again… Sri Lanka has its own set of the Big Five animals. The famous five include the Asian Elephant, Sri Lankan Leopard, Sloth Bear, Blue Whale and the Sperm Whale. This 6 nights and 7 days itinerary covers the ‘must sees’ of Sri Lankan wildlife; and a varied setting, experience the giants of Indian Ocean frolicking in the open sea, and witness the elusive Leopard and the Sloth bear in the dense tropical island country of Sri Lanka. This should be on top of the list for any wildlifer.

Yala National Park is the most visited and second largest National Park in Sri Lanka. Yala is situated in the southeast coast of the island and is a gazette national park since 1900. Yala has the highest density of Leopards living in the world and the acts of this sly predator would definitely take you by surprise. Leopards steal the show and Elephants are close runner ups! You will find Sri Lankan Elephants, Deers in great numbers. Yala also has eye catching cultural relevance with a pinch of history. Dating back to the Ramayan days, Yala was the Ravan’s territory which is now submerged in the sea. Two of the important pilgrimage sites, Sithulpahua and Magul Vihara of Buddhist Civilization in Yala are a frequent route for lakhs of pilgrims who march on foot across the forest.

Mirissa is a sleepy coastal village located on the southern cost of Sri Lanka, not too far from the known city of Galle. The village is famous for surfers and for whale watching. The sandy beaches, tropical weather and the marine life make it an ideal place for relaxing, mixed with some adventure. Southern Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world to see the two majestic creatures of the whale family, the Blue Whale and Sperm Whale. It falls in the annual migratory route from Horn of Africa to the Arabian Sea.

Udawawale National Park was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River, as well as to protect the catchment of the reservoir. The park is famous for being home to approximately 600 resident elephants, which will be the main focus of the ‘Big Five’. You could also see water buffalo, water monitor lizards, sambar deer, monkeys and the occasional leopard

Day 1:- Arrive in Sri Lanka – Mirissa
Arrive at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo and be received by our representative. Take the scenic drive from Colombo to Mirissa. This is a 3 hours drive that will take you to the beautiful beach town of Mirissa. Check in to your comfortable resort, and relax in the evening. Mirissa has long stretches of white sand beaches, take long walks, or just sit watching the sunset.

Day 2:- Whale watching in Merissa
You will have an early start to the day today; you will be taken to the Mirissa harbor at around 6:30 AM where you start your boat ride to go whale watching. Whale watching season is from November to April. Southern Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world to see the two majestic creatures of the whale family, the Blue Whale and Sperm Whale. It falls in the annual migratory route from Horn of Africa to the Arabian Sea. In the evening, you will be taken to the archaeological and architectural heritage monument, the Galle Fort, which was first build by the Portuguese colonists in 1587 and extensively fortified by the Dutch in the 17th century. Dinner and your overnight stay will be back at the resort.

Day 3:- Whale watching in Mirissa – Yala National Park
You will get to enjoy another day of whale watching in Mirissa before we move to a different landscape. After a morning session of whale watching we will take another scenic drive from Mirissa to Yala National Park; this is a 2 hours drive. Once you check into your resort, you can choose to go for a evening safari in the park, or just put your feet up and relax.

Day 4 and Day 5 – Yala National Park – Udawawale national Park
Enjoy two full days of wildlife safari at Yala National Park. Herds of wild Elephants and Buffalos grazing by the waterhole are a common sight. Yala also has a very high density of the resident Sri Lankan Leopards. You can also catch a glimpse of the Sloth Bear at Yala.
By the end of two full days of wildlife safari you will be transferred to Udawalawe National Park.

Day 6:- Udawawale National Park
Spend another day of wildlife safari at the park. The park is famous for being home to approximately 600 resident elephants, which will be the main focus of the ‘Big Five’. You could also see water buffalo, water monitor lizards, sambar deer, monkeys and the occasional leopard.

Day 7:- Departure
On the final day you will be transferred to Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, bringing your exotic Sri Lankan wildlife experience to an end.
