All visitors traveling from India to Papua New Guinea are required to possess a valid International Certificate of Vaccination against Yellow Fever. Hot tropical climate with lot of variations due rains at sea level. Highlands are much cooler with even occasional snowfalls at mountain peaks.
The local currency is Kina. 1 US Dollar is approximately 2.5 Kina. There are no restrictions on the import of local or foreign currency. The export of local currency is restricted to K200 and foreign currency to the equivalent of K10,000.
The banks are usually open from 8:45 AM to 3:00 PM from Monday to Thursday and 8:45 AM to 4:00 PM on Friday. They are closed on the Weekends and Public Holidays. American Express is the most widely accepted credit card; MasterCard and Visa are often accepted as well.
Tipping can be done in a common tip box or fund in the lodges. Tipping however is not customary in Papua New Guinea.
Health Safety: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you enter Papua New Guinea prior to 10 days of your visit in ‘yellow-fever zone’. Vaccinations for Measles, Hepatitis, Diptheria, Dengue, Malaria and Rabies are recommendable. Being a tropical country Dehydration is the common problem. Follow Water and Food safety rules below as a precaution against diarrhoea and gastroenteritis.
It is advisable to drink bottled water.
Travel Safety: Papua New Guinea is a tourist friendly country and there is no major threat of being robbed or a heavy loss. Basic travel precautions of being attentive and follow local advice must be taken.
Digicell Network can be tapped for the phone. Phone calls, internet for Skype and Viber, text messages and emails are all available on this network. However, there can be issues of connectivity in the lodges and forests. Wifi internet connectivity is available in some places, but cannot be depended upon in the lodges and remote locations.
Voltage is 240V and the Frequency is 50Hz. The power sockets used are Type I and hence it is recommended to use a universal travel adaptor.
