Kinabalu National Park – The Park is home to Borneo’s highest mountain, the Mount Kinabalu that stands at 13455 ft. The park is itself located at 5000 feet at the foothills of this majestic mountain. An extremely diverse park with Majestic mountains, meandering rivers, hot water springs, waterfalls and very unique wildlife. This is Malaysia’s very first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Covering an area of 753.7 square kilometres it houses very unique and rich flora of around 6000 species of plants which also includes the Rafflesia, the world’s largest flower, the pitcher plant and more than a 1000 species of Orchids. Its rich fauna includes 90 species of lowland mammals and 22 montane species which includes the Borneo Gibbon, Tarsier, Malay Bear, Grey-leaf Monkey, Red-leaf Monkey, the Orang-utan, the Bay Cat, the Kinabalu Ferret Badger. It also has 61 species of frogs and toads, 40 species of fish, around 200 species of butterfly and 320 species of birds which includes the very rare Kinabalu friendly badger. The park is easily accessible and is only 83 kms from Kota Kinabalu.
Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre – It is the largest Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre in the world. The centre is a great opportunity to learn about the Rainforests and their wildlife, the highlight ofcourse being the Orang-Utans. Orang-Utans which when translated in Malay mean the Man of the Forest. They can probably seen the closest in this natural habitat. The centre takes care of the abandoned Orang-utans and prepares them for the wild. Many other species are found in the centre, providing an opportunity to get up close and personal with them.
Sukau - Sukau is beautifully located on the lower banks of the Kinabatangan River and borders the Kinabatangan Wildlife sanctuary. The Kinabatangan river seems never ending with a length of 560kms and is rich in Borneo’s primates, mainly 10 in number that include the Proboscis Monkey, Maroon Langur and the Borneon Gibbon that are endemic to Borneo.
Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary - The never ending Kinabatangan river slithers through the sanctuary supporting a very rich and diverse flora and fauna. Located in the lower basin of the Borneon Rainforest, this Sanctuary is probably the most concentrated in wildlife. Over 200 species of birds, including 8 Bornean hornbills, Storm’s Stork, Bornean ground cuckoo and several other unique and endangered species that include 10 primates, crocodiles, otters, pygmy elephants, clouded leopard and flat headed cat.
Danum Valley Conservation Area– Danum valley conservation area is located in a 438 square kilometres of wild rainforest. It can easily be called The Wildlifer’s paradise due to its extreme wilderness with only nature and wildlife to give you company. More than 120 mammals that also includes several rare and endangered species, 40 fish species, reptiles, amphibians, rare butterflies and insects and over 300 species of birds are found here.
